Terms of use and license agreement
Last updated: November 6, 2026
About these terms
These terms are the Terms of Service for smartytab.app and the End User License Agreement for the SmartyTab software ("SmartyTab", the "app"), offered by HashLab.Digital, a business based in Alberta, Canada ("we", "us"). By installing or using SmartyTab, or by buying a license, you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use it. If you use SmartyTab for an organization, you confirm you may accept these terms for it.
1. License
Subject to these terms, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use SmartyTab on up to 3 Macs that you own or control, for your own use. A license belongs to one person. It is not for sharing with others or for offering as a service. SmartyTab requires a Mac with Apple Silicon running a supported version of macOS. The software is licensed, not sold; we keep all rights not granted here.
To use a license, you enter your license key in the app, which registers a hashed device ID on our license server. You can free a seat by deactivating a Mac in the app's Settings. To prevent abuse, the number of times a key can be moved to new Macs within a period is limited. Contact us if you hit the limit legitimately.
2. Free plan and Pro trial
SmartyTab has a Free plan and a paid Pro plan. The Free plan costs nothing and has no time limit. It includes autocomplete for up to 100 accepted words a day, counted on your Mac and reset at local midnight, and the spelling check. Pro adds unlimited autocomplete, the grammar and style check, rephrase, other words and actions on selected text. We may change what the Free plan includes; the current limits are shown on smartytab.app.
New installations get Pro free for 14 days with no payment details. The trial is tied to the Mac. We may refuse or end a trial that is being abused, for example by trying to restart it. When the trial ends, SmartyTab continues on the Free plan until you activate a Pro license.
3. Plans, payment and renewal
- Pro Monthly: US$6 per month. Pro Yearly: US$49 per year. Both renew automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. Pro Lifetime: US$99, paid once.
- Prices are shown in US dollars on the site and at checkout. Taxes may be added where required.
- Payments are processed by Stripe through Stripe Managed Payments. Stripe, selling through Link ("Sold through Link"), is the merchant of record: it charges you, handles tax and VAT, and issues receipts. Stripe's terms apply to the payment itself.
- You can cancel a subscription at any time through the link on your Stripe receipt or by contacting us. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep access until the end of the period you paid for.
- If a renewal payment fails and is not recovered, the license ends.
- We may change prices for future renewals with reasonable notice by email. The new price applies from your next renewal, and you can cancel before it.
- Refunds are covered in the refund policy: full refund within 14 days of purchase, no questions asked.
4. What Lifetime means
A Lifetime license is valid for the current major version of SmartyTab (the version number to the left of the first dot, for example 1.x) and for all updates and fixes released within that major version, for as long as we continue to offer and support SmartyTab. "Lifetime" refers to the life of the product, not to your life or to any particular number of years. A later major version (for example 2.0) may require a new purchase or a paid upgrade, which we may offer at a discount, and your existing version keeps working as long as the license is valid. If we discontinue SmartyTab, we will give reasonable notice, and we will make a reasonable effort to leave the last version working offline, but we are not obliged to run the license server forever. Features that depend on third-party systems (such as Apple Intelligence or macOS) may change when those systems do.
5. Restrictions
Except where the law gives you a right that cannot be waived, you may not:
- reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble SmartyTab, or try to extract its source code or model weights, except for components that are open source (see section 6);
- copy, sell, resell, rent, lease, sublicense or distribute SmartyTab or a license key, or share a key with people other than yourself;
- circumvent or tamper with licensing, activation, trial or seat limits, or use cracked, shared or fraudulently obtained keys;
- remove notices, or use SmartyTab to build a competing product or to break the law or others' rights;
- overload or attack the license server.
6. Third-party components
SmartyTab includes third-party software and models, which stay under their own licenses. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under those licenses.
- LanguageTool rules and dictionaries, and TabTypeGrammar (our Swift port of them): GNU Lesser General Public License 2.1, languagetool.org. TabTypeGrammar ships as a separate dynamic library, and you may replace it with your own build. Source offer: the source code is available at github.com/IamCooller/tabtype-grammar, and on request by email we will provide a copy for as long as the law requires.
- Gemma 4 (Google) and Qwen language models: Apache License 2.0.
- MLX, mlx-swift and mlx-swift-lm: MIT License. Sparkle (updates): MIT License. yyjson and EventSource: MIT License.
- swift-transformers, swift-huggingface, swift-jinja, swift-crypto, swift-asn1, swift-collections and swift-numerics: Apache License 2.0.
- Lucide icons: ISC License. Instrument Serif typeface: SIL Open Font License 1.1.
The full license texts and notices are included with the app (Settings, Open-source licenses). Apple Intelligence is a service of Apple and is subject to Apple's terms.
7. AI output
SmartyTab's suggestions, corrections, rephrasings and synonyms are generated by language models and can be wrong, incomplete, misleading or unsuitable. They are not professional, legal, medical or financial advice. AI output can contain mistakes, so check important text before you send it. You are responsible for reading and approving everything before you send or publish it, and for the text you write. We do not claim any rights over your text.
SmartyTab may update, replace or remove on-device models and features in app updates. Output quality and behaviour may change between versions. Apple Intelligence availability depends on Apple, including its supported devices, operating systems, languages and regions.
8. Privacy
Our privacy policy explains what we collect. In short, your typed text is processed on your Mac and is not sent to us.
9. Warranty disclaimer
SmartyTab is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law, we give no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy of output, and uninterrupted or error-free operation. SmartyTab works through macOS Accessibility and third-party apps, and we cannot promise it works in every app or after every macOS update. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain disclaimers, so some of this may not apply to you, and consumer rights that cannot be excluded remain.
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we exclude all liability for loss or damage arising from your use of, or inability to use, SmartyTab, including indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages and lost profits, revenue, data, goodwill or business, even if we were told they were possible. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability for any claim relating to SmartyTab is limited to the amount you paid us for the license in the 12 months before the claim arose (for Lifetime, the amount you paid for it). Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, such as for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
11. Termination
You can stop using SmartyTab at any time and can deactivate your Macs in Settings. We may suspend or end your license if you materially break these terms (for example by sharing keys or circumventing licensing), if a payment is refunded, reversed or disputed, or if the law requires it. When a license ends, you must stop using SmartyTab and delete it from your Macs. Sections that by their nature should survive (including 5 to 7 and 9 to 12) survive termination.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Courts in Alberta have non-exclusive jurisdiction, except that mandatory consumer protection rules of the place where you live still apply to you, and you may bring a claim there if the law gives you that right.
13. Changes
These terms may change and adapt over time, for example when we add features, change plans or update models. The date at the top of this page shows the version in force. For material changes we will give notice on this page or in the app. Changes apply going forward, and if you keep using SmartyTab after a change takes effect, you accept the updated terms. If you do not agree to a change, stop using SmartyTab and, for a recent purchase, ask for a refund under the refund policy.
14. Contact
